And so ends Veterans' Day, which was originally Armistice Day commemorating the end of WWI, which was to be the "war to end all wars".
I refuse to honor the weaselly shifting of this to Monday, in hopes of three-day weekends and maybe a hot sale, and I consider Memorial Day as sacred on May 31st no matter what day of the week.
We do not honor our fallen war dead by buying appliances and grilling stuff, and we do not honor our soldiers by dismissively sending them into harm's way for little reason.
They, for whatever reason, sign up to defend us and our country. They are our ambassadors in more ways than our officially appointed ambassadors can ever be. They show the best of what we can be: honorable, noble, dedicated. I am proud of everyone who chooses to wear the uniform and earns the right to continue wearing the uniform and serve us, and I'm grateful that they consider the sacrifice worthy.
While I am ashamed that those in charge are willing to wage war recklessly, and I am outraged that most people care more about American Idol than care about our rigged elections, our crooked thuggish leaders, or our refusal to honor our own laws...I still thank everyone in our military for being willing to defend what we stand for.
Now, I simply hope that what we stand for is worth defending, for our biggest enemies are our leaders.
Please, let's make the United States honorable, and speak out for what is right. It's not beyond reason to speak out for transparent elections, basic civil rights including that of free speech and dissent, and the willingness to stand for principle rather than profit.
And please, let those who serve come home safely and well, or at least be treated properly when broken.
'Nuff said.
[this is good] Great post.
I'm moved and humbled by the sacrifices those young men and women are making in Iraq and Afghanistan and outraged by the callous, self-serving politicians who sent them there and who don't seem to recognise the enormity of what they've done.

Thanks. I'm always always grateful for those who've served and those who serve now, and hate the pro-war faction that would never send their own kids and family, because they "have better things to do".
